At the end of 2016 there were more than 40 million internally displaced people worldwide. They suffer extreme hardship as displacement disrupts their lives and livelihoods and exposes them to a host of threats to their mental and physical well-being. The people they leave behind and their new host communities are also affected. The failure to tackle the problem and find lasting solutions is alarming.

This brochure explores the issue, and details how the ICRC works to help people avoid displacement and to address the specific needs of those displaced and their host communities.
