Innovating Around Accountability: A Review of Innovative Initiatives in Humanitarian Contexts

This report covers the findings of a review of eight initiatives related to child participation and accountability to children that was conducted using an innovation framework.

This review, conducted as part of the Norwegian Humanitarian Innovation Platform consortium supported by Innovation Norway, discusses what constitutes innovation in humanitarian contexts. Using ALNAP’s definition of humanitarian innovation (“an iterative process that identifies, adjusts and diffuses ideas for humanitarian action”) and learning from ALNAP’s work on evaluating humanitarian innovation, an innovation review framework was developed that considered the innovation process, factors that contribute to whether an innovation is successful, the 9 basic requirements for meaningful and safe child participation, and the outcomes of the innovation. This review framework was used to reflect on eight initiatives related to child participation and accountability to children. This report contains the analysis of those reviews, as well as recommendations about how Save the Children can improve its ability to develop and scale innovative initiatives in the future.
