This guide aims to provide an overview of the household economy approach and how it is implemented in the field and applied for different purposes. It is part of a toolkit produced by Save the Children and FEG Consulting for the southern Africa Regional Hunger and Vulnerability Programme (RHVP).

The toolkit was developed in order to assist the RHVP in its objective of strengthening the capacity of government and national and international non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff to undertake accurate, reliable and
relevant vulnerability assessment and analysis in southern Africa, especially within national Vulnerability Assessment Committees (VACs) and the Southern Africa Development Community Regional VAC (SADC–RVAC).

This guide updates and replaces 'Save the Children’s The Household Economy Approach: A resource manual for practitioners' (2000) by John Seaman, Paul Clarke, Tanya Boudreau and Julius Holt, and also draws on resources produced subsequently by FEG Consulting.
